New natural wines from Sardinia have just arrived on our shelves.
Lorenzo and Roberto Pusole are not just ordinary winemakers. As well as growing local grape varieties Vermentino and Cannonau, they also raise semi-wild pigs of the native Sardinian breed and local olive and grain varieties. Their organic farm in the Ogliastra area on the east coast of Sardinia works in perfect balance with nature.
The vineyards between the villages of Baunei and Lotzorai lie on incredibly diverse soils ranging from clay to sandy and full of stones, and are influenced by the nearby sea and hills up to over 1,000 metres high. The cultivation and production of the wines is completely natural - the weeds are tended by sheep, the vines are not irrigated and thus develop deep roots that absorb not only water but also minerals that affect the flavour, there are no chemical sprays or stimulants, the yield is very low and each bush yields only 1-1.5 kg of grapes. Even in the cellar, the brothers hardly interfere with the vinification, all the wines are left to macerate on the skins, the fermentation is spontaneous and the wine goes into the bottle without filtration.
Thanks to this approach, their wines are very distinctive, straightforward, aromatic and reflect the terroir and characteristics of the individual varieties.
